Overview of the 3rd Grade Program

Third grade is an exciting transitional year between primary and upper elementary grades where students get to take more responsibility and show their creative interests. At this stage, we use reading in every aspect of learning, developing fluency and strengthening comprehension skills in all subject areas. We tackle computation skills like multiplication and division, as well as critical thinking and problem solving. Social Science explores ancient civilizations and analyzes how those models impact our communities of today, as well as growing students’ understanding of map use, timelines, and cause and effect. Science is experiential learning at its finest! With our curriculum ranging from plants and animals, to simple machines and force of motion, the science lab compliments our in class learning with hands on experiments and live animals, while exciting field trips engage the concept in a real world setting.

Unique projects include “Heritage Day: Where do You Come From”, researching and orally presenting on a famous person in history, book reports with a twist, and more! We take trips to places like the VA Sports Hall of Fame, the VA aquarium, and more, while third grade’s favorite guests in class are from VA Waste Management, NASA, and Move It! Math teachers. Students are also exposed to resources classes including French, Art, Computer, Music, Library, Science Lab, and PE.
