Music Overview (Pre-Kindergarten-Second Grade)

Pre-Kindergarten

Vocal: Rote songs about family, animals and seasons.  Call and response songs.  Varied tonalities and meters.

Gross & Fine Motor Movement: Locomotor movement, including walking, marching, galloping etc.; finger plays; simple rhythm instruments.

Listening:  General nature sounds; age-appropriate music selections from variety of genre; children’s poetry and fables

Creativity/ Improvisation:  Recorded movement stories; instrument play

Ensemble Development:  Recorded movement stories; instrument play

Music Theory:  Echo short major and minor tonal patterns on a neutral syllable; Echo two-beat duple and triple rhythmic patterns, first on neutral syllable, adding Gordon rhythm language as appropriate.

Performance:  Grandparents/Grand Friends Day

Kindergarten 

Vocal: Rote songs about family, animals and seasons.  Call and response songs.  Varied tonalities and meters.

Gross & Fine Motor Movement:  Locomotor movement, including walking, marching, galloping etc.; finger plays; simple rhythm instruments.

Listening:  General nature sounds; age-appropriate music selections from variety of genre; children’s poetry and fables

Creativity/ Improvisation: Recorded movement stories; instrument play

Ensemble Development: Rhythm instruments; simple 1-part ostinato on macrobeat

Music Theory:  Echo short major and minor tonal patterns with solfege; Echo two-beat duple and triple rhythmic patterns with Gordon rhythm language.

Performance: Grandparents/Grand Friends Day

First Grade

Vocal: Folk songs of increasing length and complexity with a nature theme. Brief solo parts within group songs.

Gross & Fine Motor Movement:  Circle and partner dances. Barred instruments and drumming patterns requiring finer control.

Listening:  Specific nature sounds; instrument families; classical, jazz and folk music selections

Creativity/ Improvisation:  Dramatize events through movement and/or instrumental accompaniment

Ensemble Development:  Simple speech choruses; drum ensembles; take turns leading improvisation

Music Theory: Graphic notation; read/write simple eighth-note duple and triple rhythm patterns patterns; dynamics; other musical symbols.

Performance: Christmas Program; Spring Musical; Grandparents/Grand Friends Day

Second Grade 

Vocal:  Partner songs; root melodies; follow print music.

Gross & Fine Motor Movement:  Muliticultural folk dances including partners, circle and line formations; partner clapping games.

Listening:  Multicultural folksongs and folk instruments; Classical masterworks; jazz; ragtime; steel band; spirituals.

Creativity/ Improvisation:  Dramatize folk stories through movement and/or instrumental accompaniment

Ensemble Development:  Speech choruses; pitched instrument ensemble; drum ensembles

Music theory:  Read/write simple major and minor tonal patterns; Read/write  sixteenth note rhythmic patterns; identify familiar tonal and rhythmic patterns in new music.

Performance:  Christmas Program; Spring Musical; Grandparents/Grand Friends Day
