Overview of the 1st Grade Program

In first grade, students continue to develop academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. They are given many opportunities to learn in a positive, caring environment which fosters optimum growth. Students are encouraged to learn in new ways while challenging them to think creatively and work effectively with others.

Students continue in Superkids Reading Series, begun in Kindergarten, which focuses on phonics, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling and writing. In Math, students learn skills in a real life context and explore problem solving strategies as well as strengthen skills in math operations. Science and Social Studies help students gain an awareness of the world around them and the skills for becoming good citizens in our community.

Curriculum coordinated field trips utilize the cultural and natural resources found in our region.  Students participate in service projects throughout the year, including adopting a foster family at Christmas.

Praise for the 1st Grade Program

“First grade was a wonderful experience for our child. She further developed her core skills and enjoyed the many hands on resource classes offered. St. Andrews provides her more than just academic proficiency, she is also learning how to be a responsible and caring citizen of the world.” -A. Hale
