St. Andrews Episcopal School is Rich in Traditions:
Dear Father of us all, we pray that Thou wilt bless our school. And teach us now and every day the meaning of Thy rule. In every class, at daily work, we strive to learn Thy way. O guide us, Heavenly Father, in all we do or say.
Back to School Picnic
A fun event where school families, old and new, meet and share a special time before the school year begins.
Children come together each morning in chapel. Our chapel service, taken from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, includes scripture, music, prayer, and a short, interactive homily. Student presentations, announcements, and awards are part of this special time together.
Every Thursday, there are birthday blessings for children whose birthdays fall within the week.
The presentation by the birthday children of books to the school library at these Thursday services is a St. Andrew’s tradition. Parents typically donate the cost of the book to the library fund.
Back to School Night
Held in September, this evening event allows parents to meet with their child’s teacher and visit classrooms. This event informs the parents about what the child will be learning and doing throughout the year. Teachers will have student work displayed and discuss classroom expectations.
Students at St. Andrew’s learn early on that giving back to the community is a rewarding experience that improves the lives of others. Knowing that it is better to give than receive, students develop a sense of civic and moral responsibility and generosity of heart. A variety of community service projects occur throughout the school year. Some of the community service projects are our weekly Thankful Thursday food drive as well as our grade level Christmas Basket program. Both of these outreach programs sponsor area families in need.
This much anticipated event is held at the end of the school year for all students. Pre- kindergarten students have their special day at the day school. Grades K-5 students participate in field day activities at the Newport News YMCA. A parent volunteer group organizes activities in conjunction with the Physical Education teacher. At the conclusion of field day the grade that has demonstrated the best sportsmanship and school spirit is presented with the Howard W. Saunders Memorial Trophy.
Fifth Grade Dinner
As part of the graduation activities for the fifth grader and their parents, the Parents’ Association sponsors a formal dinner celebration. After dinner a baccalaureate service and commissioning follows, as the fifth grade students prepare to graduate from St. Andrew’s the following day.
Pre-K / Kindergarten Farewell
At the end of the school year, our Pre-K and K classes each sing a farewell song in chapel for the fifth grade students that have assisted them throughout the school year in chapel and the classroom.
Parents’ Association hosts a school-wide movie night for our families complete with popcorn!
Grandparents' & Grand-Friends' Day
In May, St. Andrew’s welcomes grandparents and grand-friends-all very important people in the children’s lives. The day features musical performances, student artwork and a reception.
Fathers' and Friends' Night
Fathers and special friends are invited to share an evening at school, which includes a special program, classroom visitations and a reception.
The Pumpkin Palooza is a fun event for students of all ages! Each year we feature tons of fun activities and delicious food. It’s a fun event for the whole family!
The annual Christmas Program features selected grades on rotating years in this holiday program directed by our talented St. Andrew’s Music Teachers. It is followed by a reception for the entire family, alumni and the community.
