Clubs & Activities

Clubs

Computer Club

This fifth grade club meets several times a month before or after school to explore new ways of using technology to support their classroom experience.

Battle of the Books

Students in fourth and fifth grade read books from a list comprised by the public library and compete for selection to the team that represents the school in a city-wide competition. Students are expected to know details from the books and be able to quickly answer questions developed by the library staff. SAES has a winning tradition, competing against area public and private elementary schools.

French Club

Open to fourth and fifth grade students, this club meets twice each month focusing on conversational skills and exploring the French language and culture.

Pre-K / Kindergarten Helpers

As part of their leadership roles, 5th grade students rotate in assisting our youngest students as they prepare to go to morning chapel, sitting with the class, and serving as positive role models.

Chorus

Fourth and Fifth grade students participate in an additional music class each week that focuses on choral skills. The students present short programs throughout the year for the church, area retirement communities, parents and grandparents.

Safety Patrols

As part of their leadership roles, 5th grade students assist with morning and afternoon carpools on a rotating basis as well as raising and lowering the flags. The students open car doors and the school doors as well as escorting the Pre-kindergarten students to class.

Reading Club

Fifth grade students volunteer to serve as reading buddies to the younger students, sharing stories with them and listening as they practice their new reading skills.

Cross Country

Fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a middle school cross country track competition with area independent schools. There are four meets in the fall that take place along a 1.5 mile course at Hampton Roads Academy.
